Retaining students can be challenging due to the unique barriers and life circumstances our students face, such as work commitments, family responsibilities, transportation issues, and financial constraints. These factors can make it difficult for students to attend classes regularly and stay motivated. However it is possible to improve retention rates and support our students in achieving their educational goals.
Understand and Address Barriers
- Initial Assessments: Conduct thorough assessments at the beginning to understand each student’s barriers, such as work schedules, childcare needs, and transportation challenges.
- Resource Referral: Connect students with community resources that can help alleviate these barriers, such as transportation assistance and childcare services.
Build a Supportive Learning Environment
- Welcoming Atmosphere: Create a classroom environment that is inclusive, respectful, and non-judgmental, making students feel comfortable and valued.
- Peer Support Groups: Encourage the formation of study groups and peer support networks to foster a sense of community and mutual support among students.
Flexible Scheduling and Delivery
- Multiple Class Times: Offer classes at various times to accommodate different schedules. Suppose you have a student who does one-on-one tutoring to see what times and days work best for their schedule.
- Online and Hybrid Options: Provide online or hybrid learning options to make education more accessible for students with time or transportation constraints. Hold tutor sessions over Zoom, Google Meet, or FaceTime.
Relevant and Engaging Curriculum
- Contextual Learning: Design a curriculum relevant to students’ lives and goals, integrating real-world applications they can relate to.
- Interactive Methods: Use interactive and hands-on teaching methods to keep students engaged and make learning more dynamic.
Effective Communication and Support
- Regular Check-Ins: Maintain regular communication with students through phone calls, texts, or emails to offer support and encouragement and to address any issues.
Skill Development and Confidence Building
- Incremental Goals: Set small, achievable goals to help students build confidence and experience success, which can motivate them to continue their education.
- Skill Workshops: Offer lessons on essential skills such as study techniques, time management, and goal setting to help students succeed.
Provide Necessary Resources
- Learning Materials: Ensure students can access necessary learning materials, such as textbooks, workbooks, and online resources.
- Technology Access: Provide access or connect students to resources that can help them have access to computers and the internet for students participating in online learning.
Recognition
- Celebrate Achievements: Recognize and celebrate students’ milestones and accomplishments with certificates, awards, and public recognition.
Continuous Feedback and Improvement
- Regular Feedback: Make sure students have the option to leave feedback about classes and tutor sessions. Our students have valuable insight!
- Adaptation: Be flexible and willing to adapt the program based on feedback and the changing needs of students.
